Walnut Disco Whirls
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
3 Tbsp. brown sugar, packed
1 1/2 tsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
Chop walnuts fine; set aside.
Beat together butter, sugar, egg and vanilla.
Resift flour with baking powder and salt.
Blend into creamed mixture to make a stiff dough.
Chill dough about 1 hr. for easier handling.
Mix together brown sugar, cocoa and milk.
Roll dough out on pastry cloth to a 10-in square.
Spread with cocoa mixture and sprinkle with walnuts, leaving about 1/2 in. uncovered at opposite sides of dough.
Roll up tightly as for jelly roll, beginning at one side where the dough is not spread with filling.
Wrap in waxed papaer and freee until firm, several hours or overnight.
Cut into 1/4-in. slices and arrange on lightly greased cookie sheets.
Bake above oven center at 375ºF for 14 to 15 min., until edges are lightly browned.
Remove to wire racks to cool.
Makes 3 1/2 doz. (2 1/4-in.) cookies.
